Rituals and practices

The following are the detailed customs and procedures observed in Tamil Nadu during Varalakshmi Pooja: 

Typically, preparations take place on Thursday evening. 

• Cleaning and Decorating: 

Tidy up the house, paying particular attention to the pooja area and entrance. Use rice flour to create kolams (rangoli) for the entryway and pooja area. Use mango leaves and flowers as decorations. 

• Padi Pooja: 

Draw kumkum and turmeric lines at the doorways of rooms to represent good fortune and to invite wealth. Spread raw rice on a wooden plank that has been wrapped with a banana leaf; this will be the foundation for the kalash, or sacred pot. 

On Friday, Varalakshmi Pooja Day: 

Early Morning Baths and Attires:

To symbolize dedication and auspiciousness, women rise early, take sacred baths and wear silk sarees.

Setting Up the Pooja Platform:

• On the decorated wooden plank, place a banana leaf with a handful of rice on it.

• Fill the kalash with water, coins, turmeric, and a mix of aromatic substances. Insert mango leaves at the mouth of the kalash.

• Place a coconut (covered in turmeric and decorated with a saree blouse piece or red cloth) on top of the kalash, representing Goddess Lakshmi.

• Fix or draw the face of Goddess Lakshmi on the coconut if available, and adorn with flowers and jewelry.

• Place the Varalakshmi Amman idol or photo nearby, if available.

Ganapathi Pooja:

• Make a turmeric paste idol of Lord Ganesha (manjal pillayar). Perform a short Ganapathi pooja to remove obstacles before beginning the Lakshmi pooja

Invocation of Goddess Lakshmi:

• With devotion, invite the Goddess into the kalash by chanting shlokas and performing avahanam (invocation)

Pooja and Offerings:

• Perform an anga pooja (worshipping each part of the deity) with sandalwood, kumkum, turmeric, flowers, and akshata (rice grains).

• Recite Lakshmi Ashtothram (108 names) or other customary Lakshmi prayers, offering flowers for each name.

• Prepare and offer traditional neivedhyam items such as kozhukattai (modakam), payasam, vadai, appam, idly, rice, sundal, fruits, and coconut.

• Offer panchamrit, fresh fruits, betel leaf, and water. Light lamps and perform the aarti using camphor and incense

Arathi and Prayers:

• Do Mangala Ararthi and pray for the well-being of the family.

• Rotate a handful of rock salt three times around the deity and throw it away to remove the evil eye.

Distribution of Prasadham

• Distribute the prasadam among family, friends and neighbours, sharing the blessings of the occasion.

Family and Charity:

• Traditional practice includes fasting and eating only after the pooja. Many women donate to the needy, considering it especially meritorious on this day.
