Kamadhenu, often referred to as Surabhi, is a spiritual god illustrated in Vedic manuscripts as the mother of all cows. The name itself translates to “one who grants desires.”

She is a magical cow who has the supernatural powers to fulfill the wishes of her owner. Usually, she is depicted as a white cow with white wings and peafowl feathers, containing all Gods inside her body. She brings prosperity, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment to her owners.

The origins of Kamadhenu are sung differently in different literatures. While some claim she rose from the depths of the cosmic ocean, a few others claim that she is the daughter of God Daksha and the wife of Sage Kashypa.

As the cosmic ocean was churned, various divine beings and treasures emerged. Kamadhenu was one of the miraculous beings that emerged during this celestial process. She rose with divine qualities, symbolizing purity, abundance, and blessings.

Legend also goes that Kamadhenu was in possession of the sages Jamadangi and Vashita. It is also mentioned that whoever tried to steal her away faced distressing and unfortunate consequences. She symbolizes the wealth and purity of Brahmins, providing them with milk, and is often used in Vedic fire sacrifices.

Another notable ability of Kamadhenu is her capacity to provide an endless supply of milk. This milk serves as both a source of nourishment and a vital component in religious rituals and offerings. Kamadhenu is not only a bestower of material wealth but also a protector. In certain accounts, she can call upon fierce warriors to safeguard her owner or the sage she resides with, offering a shield against threats and dangers.

In Hinduism, cows hold a significant holy value as being equal to the divine, and Kamadhenu is the symbol of the sacred life. She is connected to the celestial realm, and her abode is among the abodes of the supreme deities.
