Why do we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi is based on the event where Lord Shiva, out of compassion, restores the beheaded Ganesha with the face of an elephant. This event is a symbol of acceptance, the cycle of life, empathy, and victory. Hence, marking the birth of Lord Ganesha, Ganesh Chaturthi, or Vinayagar Chaturthi, is the most celebrated festival in India. Lord Ganesha, who is the symbol of wisdom, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles, is celebrated with complete devotion and love.

This vibrant festival is celebrated with elaborate decoration, prayers, puja, and communal gatherings. Sharing of sweets, gifts, and love is a part of this celebration, and you can even gift Ganesh Tanjore paintings to your loved ones to make the festival even more special. At Ethnic Tanjore Arts, we provide naturally handmade Tanjore paintings to add a note of classic to your celebration. Today we will have a look at the steps for performing the rituals in the right form and how to celebrate an eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi.

Pujas for Lord Ganesha

Ganesh Chaturthi is a spiritual and joyful celebration, where various pujas are performed to welcome the presence and blessings of Lord Ganesha. Here are the key steps for the pujas that you can perform:

  • The day begins with cleaning the house and the place where the idol of Lord Ganesha is placed. The members of the family bathe and wear new clothes.

  • Place the idol on a raised altar in the direction of east or north. Cover it with clean clothes and draw a rangoli before the altar.

  • Sankalpa is the process where the members of the house bow down before the idol of Lord Ganesha. The prayers are made while holding water in the hand.

  • Sprinkle holy water around the idol to purify the place around the altar. At the same time, chant mantras to invoke the presence of Lord Ganesha.

  • Offer modaks, laddos, and fruits. Following this, show incense sticks or camphor before the idol with mantras and ringing of the bell.
